But being in hospital opened my eyes. It was doctors, nurses and physios who put me back together, but the woman who pushed the trolley around the hospital with the magazines was part of the recovery process. And the mentors, the people who help those facing amputation, they were incredible. To be able to sit down with a woman – and believe me with some of the practical things you face it really helped to have a female to answer certain questions – wow, it was something else. To laugh with you, cry with you, tell you it will get better: that was crucial.”
